Rock & Mole Trek to the Tooth : FOLLOW ALONG WITH US ON OUR TRIP from July 17 to July 28. Alan "BooBoo" Kelley, Moleman, Pebbles, and myself will be riding through the Black Hills on our way to Bear Tooth Pass and Yellowstone. I will be uploading pics daily so you can see what we see. Needless to say WE ARE NOT TRAILERING - Rock Please bear in mind that 95% of these photos were taken from the back of a moving motorcycle traveling between 45-85 mph. Because of this some may be blurry. Photos by Julie "Pebbles" Land DAY #1 - We decided to slab it for the first day so we could spend more of our time in the Black Hills and Yellowstone. We hit I-24W at 5:45 am and headed toward Nashville, Paducah, and St Louis. As ususal the arch was magnificent with the sun reflecting off of the silver finish. Then we were over the Missouri River and across the entire state of Missouri. We have now stopped in Independence, MO for the night. Tomorrow we'll go north and hit 2W at the southeastern corner of Nebraska. We'll traverse Nebraska diagonally ending up in Chadron, NE for the night. Check back tomorrow for our progress. These pics have not been edited. Some of them may repeat themselves. DAY#2 - We left our motel in Independence, MO at 6 am central time. The radar showed a band of heavy thunderstorms (about an hour wide) just north on the 435 loop so we suited up before leaving Dennys. We took 435 to 29N then turned west onto 2 just after we passed to Iowa just about the same time the rain stopped. We hit 80W for a short distance before exiting on 15N. We then went left on 34/281 and then left onto 2/92. We stayed on 2/92 for 275 mi until Alliance then follwed 385N to Chadron, NE The entire trip through Nebraska was in the high 60's so we all rode in sweatshirts. The sky was scattered with big sections of clouds which kept the temperature low and the riding perfect. Alan received a nickname. It came to me out of the blue and it was only logical. He is the youngster of our group (40) and he had never been to JellyStone . . uh . . I mean Yellowstone. So . . Alan "BooBoo" Kelley was born. The young bear with the older Yogi(s)hanging out in Jellystone trying to steal some picinic baskets. DAY #3 After dinner last night it hailed hard for 10 solid minutes, then the temperature dropped and the nicest rainbow appeared. It was in the 60s when we left Chadron. We headed out 2E and then went north on 87. At Pine Ridge we took a county road through Wounded Knee, Porcupine, and Sharps Corner. We then went east on 44 along the bottom of the Badlands National Park. We proceeded through the Badlands Loop ending up at the famous Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota. After eating lunch at Wall, we hit 80W through Rapid City and ending up in Sturgis. The vendors were already setting up, so we bought some shirts and headed toward Deadwood. As usual, the Black Hills were magnificent. We took a longer route to Custer, so we hit 85S passing into Wyoming and then turning back east on 16 at Newcastle. I struck up a conversation with a solitary South Dakota Bandido and he warned me of the rattlesnakes on the roads through the canyon. He explained that rattlesnakes were the jagged lines of tar used to patch cracks in the pavement. When the front wheel encounters said rattlesnake it could make one lose control, thus ruining your day. We ended up in Custer, SD where we ate dinner at the Cattleman's Steakhouse and called it a day. DAY #4 We started at daylight so we could see the maximum wildlife in Custer State Park. Almost immediately we encountered elk, turkeys, deer, rabbits, burros, and prong horns, but the buffalo were no where to be seen. I was starting to get worried when all of a sudden we came around the bend to see a few dozen along the road. They were walking and trotting right along side us, no more than 6 feet away. After topping the next hill, we saw a herd of 300+ buffalo completely covering the roadway and both sides of the road. We eased our way into the herd. To say that we were vulnerable, would be an understatement. Two thousand pound bulls trotting alongside watching us out of the corner of their red eyes, keeping a watch over their families. It took a half hour just to work our way free of the herd. WOW! We returned to Custer, ate breakfast and headed toward Mount Rushmore through Needles Parkway. We then went to Crazy Horse Mountain and Indian Cultural Center where we saw the movie on the history of the monument and toured the grounds. We headed back to the room and then were off to Deadwood. On the way back we stopped in Hill City and ate buffalo burgers at the Bumpin Buffalo. We had a great day, we rode with the buffalo in the morning and ate them for dinner. DAY #5 We started day five at 5:30 am heading for Red Lodge, Montana. We traversed Wyoming and the highlight of the day was the Big Horn mountain range we had to cross. The elevation was close to 10,000 feet and we had to don winter gear to stay comfortable. When we reached the summit there was still snow drifts high up on the ridges. After stopping at a scenic overlook I made a comment to Boo Boo to go up there and get us some snow. I thought I was kidding, but when we looked around, Boo Boo was halfway up the hill. After retrieving a very large snowball, he descended the hill and showed off his prize. Shortly after that we saw a firggin moose coming down the side of the mountain and getting ready to cross the road. It crossed about 50 feet in front of Pebbles and I as she snapped a pic. We descended the west side of Bald Mountain into a 95 degree sauna. A hundred miles later we were in Red Lodge, MT for the night and our furthest point from home. We have travelled 2351 miles since we left home. Tomorrow we're staying in Cooke City, MT where the low is to be 43 degrees. Unfortunately, there is no internet in Cooke City so there will be no picture updates tomorrow. Hopefully, I can upload on Wednesday night when we are staying in West Yellowstone. If not then, I put them up on Thursday. Tomorrow Boo Boo will return to Jellystone . . I mean Yellowstone. Yogi and the ranger will be there too, along with our den mother. DAY #6 The day started a little later than normal. We wanted the sun to come up enough for us to enjoy the vistas from Bear Tooth Pass. What can you say about Bear Tooth except it's the highlight of the trip. It's really hard to describe in words and even the pictures don't do it justice. The best way to see the pass is ascending from the Red Lodge side and descending toward the Yellowstone side. The vistas are much more impressive that way as you can see by our photos. When we were near the top I just couldn't resist plugging Road Rash by writing it's name in the snow. We stopped at almost every pull off and were all a little light headed by the time we started down. The elevation is close to 12,000 feet and the air is real thin up there. As we descended the beauty was breathtaking. We motored as slowly as possible to soak in every moment as we headed to Cooke City, Montana where we were staying for the night. We stayed at the same mom and pop motel where Julie and I stayed in 2004. Cooke City is a hole in the forest with only a dozen or so businesses. Alan said it reminded him of the little town in the old television show, Northern Exposure. Cooke City is only 5 miles from the northeast entrance to Yellowstone. Unfortunately, four of those miles were completely torn up and the wait was close to 30 minutes. Then you had to traverse a mud road. Thank goodness it was packed pretty good, so it wasn't that difficult. It was a real shock, however, to the trailer jockeys that had nice clean, shiny bikes. Our bikes were already covered with bugs from 10 states so we could have cared less about the road. The wait was the only pain in the arse. After checking in we entered the park and did the northern loop. Of course there were buffalo, elk, deer, and an assortment of other wildlife to go along with the incredible scenery. We were all a little disappointed at the massive crowds in the park. When someone in a car think they spot something they just stop in the road whether there's a pull off or not. Then it's like a shark feeding frenzy as dozens of other vehicles stop to see what the first people are looking at. At one point the traffic was backed up 50 cars. Thank goodness we were going in the opposite direction. BooBoo just about creamed one lady who was walking backwards and not paying attention while she fiddled with her camera. It's a friggin' hoard of gawkers. While they gawking at whatever, a large moose crossed right in front of us. The hoard didn't even see it. After the loop we returned to Cooke City for dinner and an early bedtime. The local rumor is that the National Park Service is considering not letting private vehicles in the park in the future. Anyone that wants to see the park would have to go on buses, leaving their vehicles at one of the entrances. Trying to keep the roads maintained is almost impossible, especially with the small window of time they have to work on them DAY #7 We left before daylight riding into ominous skies and we tackled the wet dirt road. We were at least an hour ahead of the work crews so there was no wait. It's more than a little freaky heading into Yellowstone in the dark. We hadn't gone a mile when we rounded a curve to see a huge deer in the middle of the road. That slowed us down even more. The skies started looking better as the sky lightened, but it was overcast for most of our trip to Old Faithful. We ate breakfast at the Yellowstone General Store and went to see Old Faithful do it's thing. We then toured the old Yellowstone Lodge and loaded up for our long ride home.
